With an altitude of 3,432 meters above sea level (11,000 feet), Irazú Volcano is the highest volcano in Costa Rica and one of the most emblematic in the country. Its historic eruptive activity between 1963 and 1965 deeply marked national history, when large emissions of ash and gases affected a large part of the Costa Rican territory. Even today, this event is remembered as one of the most significant eruptions of the 20th century in Costa Rica.

During the visit you will also be able to observe the unique high-altitude paramo ecosystem, vegetation adapted to low temperatures, strong winds and the extreme conditions that predominate at the summit of the volcano. This unique landscape is home to plant species that are not found in other regions of the country.

After exploring this impressive volcanic environment, we will continue to the historic city of Cartago, founded in 1563 by the Spanish conquistador Juan Vázquez de Coronado. Cartago was the first capital of Costa Rica and played a fundamental role during the colonial era until the transfer of the capital to San José in 1823.

Here we will visit the majestic Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels, the most important religious sanctuary in the country and home of the patron saint of Costa Rica.
